Dr. W. Joseph Townsend has accepted the position of Medical Director of the Bridge Care Suites. As Medical Director, Dr. Townsend will provide guidance and counsel for the overall clinical activity of the facility. In addition, he will oversee quality measures, infection control, and utilization review.
Dr. Townsend specializes in Internal Medicine as a staff physician at Springfield Priority Care Center. His clinical expertise includes primary care, ambulatory procedures, and urgent care. He is also the Medical Director of the Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) Medical Group's Springfield Referral Division. In this position, he oversees numerous clinics and over 50 healthcare providers. Dr. Townsend previously served as Medical Director for the Carlinville Area Hospital Emergency Department after working as an Emergency Department physician in Taylorville, Hillsboro, Pana, and Shelbyville.
Dr. Townsend attended Columbia University in New York City where he received h BA in Biology. At the urging of his great uncle, Dr. Edwin Lee, a physician of local reknown, Dr. Townsend relocated to Springfield to attend Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where he completed medical school and residency training. He served as Chief of Residents while in postgraduate training.

In addition to Dr. Townsend certifications, he a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, and the Sangamon County Medical Society. He is a member of other professional boards in the Springfield area, including the Hope School, and is an active member of various local civic organizations.
Dr. Townsend is married to a Springfield native; Candace. They have 3 children; Joseph, Jocelyn, and Jacob.
